Mistake #6: Neglecting the Window Treatments
Windows are the eyes of a room, and leaving them bare or dressing them with flimsy, ill-fitting blinds can make a space feel unfinished, cold, and cheap. Plastic vertical blinds or short, “floodwater” curtains that stop awkwardly above the floor are immediate indicators of a decorating oversight. Window treatments are not just for privacy; they are a critical design layer that adds softness, texture, color, and architectural gravitas.
Properly executed drapery, in particular, can dramatically alter the perception of a room’s size and elegance. It’s a classic designer trick for adding height and a sense of luxury without undertaking a major renovation. This is one of the most impactful common home decor mistakes to correct.
The Sophisticated Solution: Hang curtains high and wide. Mount the curtain rod 4 to 6 inches above the window frame and extend it 6 to 10 inches on either side. This creates the illusion of a larger, taller window and allows the maximum amount of natural light to enter when the curtains are open. The drapes themselves should just “kiss” the floor or puddle slightly for a more dramatic effect.
